How to choose: sensors and encoders
Proximity and photoelectric sensors
Inductive proximity sensors detect metal without contact, and their rated sensing distance applies to mild steel; other metals give a shorter range. Photoelectric sensors detect objects by light: through-beam types have the longest range, retro-reflective types use a reflector, and diffuse types sense the object itself. Specify the supply voltage, output (NPN or PNP, normally open or closed), sensing distance and housing size, and choose an ingress protection rating for the environment.
Encoders
An incremental encoder gives a fixed number of pulses per revolution on A and B channels, with a Z index pulse. Specify shaft or hollow-bore mounting, body diameter, pulses per revolution, output type (open collector, push-pull or line driver), supply voltage and cable or connector. Match the output type to the input of the counter, PLC or drive it feeds.
