How to choose: stepper systems

Where steppers fit

A stepper motor moves in fixed increments, commonly 1.8 degrees (200 steps per revolution), so it can position without feedback on light to moderate loads. It is a cost-effective choice for small gantries, labelling and dispensing heads and 3D-printer-class motion. Torque falls as speed rises, so always check the torque–speed curve rather than the holding-torque figure alone.

Choosing a motor and driver

NEMA numbers describe the faceplate size in tenths of an inch: NEMA 17 is 1.7 in (about 42 mm) square, NEMA 23 is 2.3 in, NEMA 24 is 2.4 in and NEMA 34 is 3.4 in. Pick the frame from the torque you need at your working speed, then match the driver to the motor phase current and choose a supply voltage high enough for the speed. Use micro-stepping for smoother motion. If lost steps would be costly, consider a closed-loop stepper or a servo instead.

What to include in your enquiry

Having these details ready lets us confirm a model and quote in one step.

  • Required torque and speed at the load
  • Frame size (NEMA 17, 23, 24, 34) or mounting dimensions
  • Motor phase current and shaft details, if known
  • Supply voltage available for the driver
  • Open-loop or closed-loop preference
