Buying guide
How to choose: switchgear
Choosing protection devices
For MCBs, specify the number of poles, rated current, tripping curve and breaking capacity. Curve B trips at 3 to 5 times rated current, C at 5 to 10 times and D at 10 to 20 times, so choose the curve from the inrush of the load. MCCBs are specified by frame size, rated current, breaking capacity and whether the trip setting is adjustable. Motor protection circuit breakers combine short-circuit and overload protection with an adjustable current range.
Contactors and overload relays
Select contactors by motor power at the utilisation category for the duty (AC-3 for squirrel-cage motors), the coil voltage and the number of auxiliary contacts. Set the thermal overload relay to the motor full-load current and choose a trip class suited to the starting time.
