How to choose: precision gearboxes

Planetary and right-angle gearboxes

Precision gearboxes reduce motor speed and multiply torque while keeping backlash low. Inline planetary gearboxes are coaxial, compact and have high torque density. Right-angle (worm or bevel-based) gearboxes turn the drive through 90 degrees, which helps where space is tight. Backlash is quoted in arc-minutes; lower values suit positioning axes.

Selecting a gearbox

Choose the ratio from the required output speed and the motor speed, then check rated and peak output torque against the load. Confirm the motor-side flange and shaft (the gearbox must match your servo or stepper motor), the maximum input speed, the output type (solid keyed shaft, hollow shaft or flange output) and the mounting orientation.
