How to choose: gear motors
Gear motor basics
A gear motor combines an electric motor with a reduction gearbox, giving a lower output speed and higher output torque than the motor alone. Choose by the output speed and torque the machine needs, which sets the gear ratio, and by the supply: single-phase 230 V or three-phase 415 V.
Options that matter
An electromagnetic brake motor holds the load when power is removed and stops quickly, which suits positioning and hoisting duties. A variable-speed motor with a matched speed controller lets you set speed without a separate drive. Specify the mounting (foot, flange or face), shaft dimensions, duty (continuous or intermittent), reversing needs and the ingress protection for the environment.
